Everywhere I looked while watching week 1 of NFL football, I saw teams trailing late in the game, searching for a comeback score and turning to their Quarterback for help.
In Philadelphia, Kevin Kolb went down with a concussion, forcing the team to hand the rains over to Michael Vick. What did he Do? He marched the team down the field for three scores and nearly pulled out a victory. He was magnificent, scrambling to avoid the Packers blitz'es and using his arm to flick throws into tight spaces all over the field.

On Sunday Night in Washington, the Cowboys, needing a score to win on the road, turned to Tony Romo for the game winning drive. Romo became the field general, calling audibles making throws and marching his troops all the way down to the 5 yard line, before falling short after a holding call ended the game.
What fascinated me about both players was the creativity and the confidence that they played with. Both Vick and Romo exceled at finding creative ways to move the ball downfield. Avoiding the pass rush with their feet and buying time to throw. They made audibles and adjustments with confidence, their command their teamates respect and they lead.
Each QB commands the huddle as well, especially impressive in Vick's case, as he was forced into the game mid-second quarter. But both Vick and Romo inspired there teams towards furious comebacks.
They are just two examples of how important the QB position is in this era of professional football. Gone are the days of the "game managers" and the Trent Dilfer Super Bowls.
The NFL is a Quarterbacks league, and you are not winning unless you one at the top of his game.
So how great do you feel about Alex Smith?
