Guest Blogger Eric Bossier checks in with his thoughts about Les Miles and dem LSU Tigers following their near loss against UNC:
Saturdays game against NC was painful to watch. It confirmed every fear that i had coming into this year. Les Miles sill chokes, JJ is about as good a decision maker as J-Mar, and the most talented team in the nation will be lucky to have a winning SEC record.
First, Les has to go. I realized, during the game, that i don't like his coaching philosophy, at all. I realized that the only reason i loved Miles is because he coached LSU and was a bad ass during interviews. Everything else about him makes me sick.
Les is all show, he wants to wow you with the amount of talent he can put on the field. He recruits athletes who can put up the best combine scores and are the tallest, fastest, strongest players at their positions. His play calling revolves around getting the ball to a man with some open space and let him razzle-dazzle his way to the endzone. I don't think i even have to get into how he performs in the clutch.
During the national title game last year, we were treated to a show by the team who shall not be named, led by the coach who shall not be named. This teams offense seemed to get some momentum going, and nothing could get in its way. 4 and 5 yard gains with the occasional 15 yard seem. Their defense was on point, they blitzed their gaps, stuck with their man and swarmed the ball carrier. Now who were the superstars on this team?
Mark Ingram, Rb - Clearly a talented back, but talent like him comes around ever year or two, and he had the best line in the nation to give him holes.
Julio Jones, WR - A physical beast with great hands and NFL level field vision. He knows how to get open over the middle and make at least one man miss.
Defensive line - I consider that unit to be one player. No one could run up the middle on these guys and QBs looked nervous when they went under-center.
All of these guys are mentally tough, smart players who could work together and complement each other.
As we all know that coach left LSU 4 years ago (a different discussion entirely). The following year Les miles lead the former coaches team to a champion chip and then 2 respectable bowl wins. But this year marks the first all-Les-recruited team and it shows. Saturdays game was a display of cocky selfish players who thought they won the game in the third quarter. The 07 national title team played hard every down and used clever game planning to win. Matt Flynn led that team. Matt Flynn. Saben, knew how to maximize his limited talent by setting up the offensive system to work for him.
JJ looks like he just stepped into an advanced calculus class when he steps on the field. His eyes are wide (not in that Singletary way) and he looks jittery. He looks like he forces every pass, for example on a screen play he threw a 80mph bullet at the running back which bounced off him and out of bounds. He never reads the defense, he just snaps the ball and gets rid of it as soon as possible. But enough hating on Jefferson.
Point is that Les would see what he has to work and develop a system that minimizes his bad attributes and exploits his strengths.
If a coach can't manage the players that he personally recruited or learn how to call a damn timeout, then he shouldn't be in charge of our tigers.
"champion chip" haha
